ALBANY — Oklahoma’s governor claimed in a social media post that reached more than 5.7 million people this week that New York issued a commercial driver’s license to an undocumented immigrant.
The claim quickly went viral as state lawmakers and prominent politicians repeated it in their own posts without question.
Among them was U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, a North Country Republican who’s widely expected to be her party’s nominee in next year’s governor’s race.
It started when Oklahoma Gov. J. Kevin Stitt posted on social media that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol had seized a New York commercial driver’s license from an undocumented immigrant.
Stitt shared an image of the license alongside the post. It showed that, where someone’s first name would usually be, the words “No Name Given” appeared instead.
“If New York wants to hand out CDLs to illegal immigrants with ‘No Name Given,’ that’s on them. The moment they cross into Oklahoma, they answer to our laws,” Stitt said.
Stefanik quickly reacted to Sitt’s post with one of her own and a statement sent out by her office.
“The latest bombshell discovery is that Kathy Hochul’s dangerous and irresponsible ‘Green Light Law,’ allows criminal illegal immigrants to be issued commercial driver’s licenses in some cases shockingly labeled ‘No Name Given,’ allowing them to operate 80,000-pound commercial vehicles across the country,” Stefanik said.
