For a large part of the twentieth century, Boeing prioritized safety of passengers, technological advancements, and top-notch aerospace engineering. It prided itself as a firm that was driven largely by its engineers rather than quarterly earnings.

It all changed when Boeing merged with the American aerospace manufacturing corporation and defense contractor McDonnell Douglas in 1997.
