How old a child needs to be to work and the restrictions on job hours - what the law says - Chronicle Live

Lots of teenagers like the idea of getting a job to earn some money whilst continuing their studies.

It can help children feel more independent, allowing them to save or spend cash on the things they like. But what exactly are the rules when it comes to a child finding a job?

How old do they have to be to find paid employment and how many hours can they spend carrying out that work? Here, we have outlined what the law says on these matters.

According to Ask the Police, an online policing resource, a child must be at least 14 years old to be employed, and there are strict restrictions on the hours and conditions for this. These restrictions can be varied by local by-laws to a certain degree.

Such by-laws would vary depending on the type of trade and age of the child. It is possible that the local authority will have a by-law which states that children under 13 can do light agricultural and horticultural work for their parents or guardians. To see if any such by-laws exist in your area, you should contact your local authority.

The main restrictions for a child to work are:

  • must not work during school hours
  • must not work for more than two hours on a school day
  • not work for more than 12 hours during a school week (one hour between 7am and 8.30am and one hour between end of school and 7pm or two hours between end of school and 7pm)
