DES MOINES, Iowa —

The state is searching for a company to handle millions of dollars in your tax money that will pay for private school education.

Last week, Governor Reynolds signed into law her controversial plan that allows publicly-funded scholarships for private school tuition.

Many unanswered questions remain about how the program is going to work.

Republican Rep. John Wills was in charge of steering the governor's "school choice" plan through the Iowa House. He says he's confident that the company hired to oversee this program will make sure taxpayer dollars are protected.

"We've got to make sure that fraud is on top of the list of things that we have, that we're able to ensure that... these companies are able to prevent, able to investigate and able to have this money be spent in the right way," Wills said. "Iowans don't want their money to be spent wastefully or to be used in a way that was not meant to be."

Democrats say that they still have concerns that money will be wasted.

"I think that with a program this expensive, we need to get in the weeds a little bit and demand of our contractors — who are going to be spending taxpayer dollars — that they are clear about what they're going to do to make sure that our dollars are spent wisely," House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst said.
