Humana ordered by federal court to pay $32 million in fees. Here's why - The Courier-Journal

Louisville-based health insurance company Humana must pay $32.2 million to a California law firm, a federal court in Kentucky ruled in September.

The ruling, which was filed Sept. 19, follows Humana paying $90 million to the federal government to settle a whistleblower lawsuit under the False Claims Acts in August 2024.

The more than $32 million payout will go to Phillips & Cohen LLP out of San Franscico, who represented whistleblower Steven Scott in the case.

The whistleblower lawsuit alleged Humana submitted fraudulent bids to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for "lucrative Medicare Part D prescription drug contracts from 2011-2017, significantly overcharging the government," The Courier Journal previously reported.

Medicare Part D is the government's voluntary prescription drug program in which CMS contracts with private insurance companies to cover prescription drug benefits for Medicare users.
