Hundreds of workers across Illinois to be laid off in coming months, WARN Act shows - NBC 5 Chicago

Hundreds of Illinois workers in industries spanning healthcare, restaurants retail and more are expected to be laid off in the coming months, the latest update from the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining (WARN) Act revealed.

The update is part of the state law commonly known as the WARN Act, which requires employers with 75 employees or more to notify the state when they plan to layoff workers. Under the Act, employers must give workers at least 60 days notice for a plant closure or a "mass" layoff.

In the latest report, 10 companies in Illinois issued such notices.

A large number of the layoffs were reported from Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Hospital and Franciscan Health Alliance with 1,930 people given notices. The notices sent to employees of the south suburban hospital come after California-based Prime Healthcare purchased the 214-bed Franciscan Health Olympia Fields and Specialty Physicians of Illinois in January for $6.95 million.

Hospital officials told NBC Chicago the WARN Act notice was required by the state as part of the acquisition, and that Prime Healthcare plans to offer employment to all current Franciscan Health Employees.
