In their regular meeting held Tuesday, the Hurley Town Council approved the hire of Marcus Salas as a patrol officer.
Salas was fired last year from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department along with three other deputies, one of whom he had accused of hurling a baby rabbit against a vehicle while on duty and pointing a stun gun at him. Salas’ report of the bunny incident came out during an internal investigation of the gun-pointing incident.
Both accuser and accused were ultimately fired for misconduct along with two other deputies based on information discovered during the investigation, according to Sheriff Raul Villanueva. Through his lawyer, however, Salas has maintained that his firing was retaliation and that he planned to sue the department.
The misconduct report, attorney Adam Flores said, made it difficult for Salas to find other employment.
This circumstance was relieved, however, after a closed session of the Hurley council that resulted in Salas’ hire into the Hurley Police Department under Chief Kevin Vigil, who had vouched for Salas in a previous special meeting.
“I’m excited to pursue this next chapter,” Salas told the Daily Press. “I am from Hurley. I’ve lived here for three years, so I’m very familiar with the community. … I look forward to helping individuals in need.”
