Businessman and police informant Tumelo Nku said Crime Intelligence Head, Major General Feroz Khan, ordered his arrest after discovering that he was the whistleblower behind the 2021 Aeroton drug bust.
Nku told the Madlanga Commission on Thursday that Khan acted against him after he disclosed his role in providing information that triggered one of the country’s largest drug seizures.
In July 2021, police intercepted between 715kg and 751kg of cocaine hidden inside a shipping container at a warehouse in Aeroton, south of Johannesburg.
The haul was valued at about R300-million.
Nku told the commission he had alerted Gauteng traffic police Chief Inspector Samuel Mashaba about drug movements from Durban to Johannesburg, which ultimately led to the bust.
He said the situation changed when he arrived at the scene and identified himself as the original source of the intelligence.
“When I introduced myself, he asked who I was and what my business was there,” Nku said. “I told him I was the source and that I had given Mashaba the information.”
Nku alleged that Khan immediately ordered his arrest.
“He instructed that Captain Cronje be called and that I must be arrested,” he testified. “He told them to take my phones and told me to step out of the vehicle.”
He said Khan left the scene shortly after issuing the instruction.
