UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria has revealed that he will be stepping away from the promotion for the time being to address domestic abuse allegations made by his separated wife, Giorgina Badell.
In an official statement on his Instagram, the current UFC Lightweight Champion explained that he is responding to abuse allegations following his separation.
Topuria detailed the situation, stating he is being financially extorted with threats to spread domestic abuse allegations. He also wrote that all evidence has been submitted to judicial authorities, as the champion is looking to pursue legal action for attempted extortion.
In recent months, I have been subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. These allegations are entirely unfounded.
He added that this would be his only public statement on the matter, out of respect for his children and to ensure everything is handled legally rather than publicly.
With Topuria revealing that he won't be returning to the Octagon until this matter is resolved, his absence could last years, depending on the duration of the legal process. Topuria’s focus will be on resolving his legal matters and prioritizing his family, taking the time he needs before returning to competition.
