An Illinois office supply wholesaler is planning to eliminate nearly 1,300 jobs across six states.
The layoffs will impact nearly 650 Illinois workers at two sites.
Essendant Co., which has its headquarters in Deerfield, reported its intention to lay off 510 workers from its facility in Lincolnshire and 134 more from its Carol Stream site, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice sent to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
The permanent layoffs are scheduled to take place Oct. 3, according to the information provided to the state.
The Chicago-based class action law firm Strauss Borelli PLLC is investigating Essendant to determine whether the company violated the WARN Act by failing to provide employees with sufficient notice before the mass layoff. Federal law requires employers to notify workers of plant closures or mass layoffs at least 60 calendar days in advance of the event.
The Journal Star reached out to Essendant by telephone and email but did not receive a response.
