'I'm £25K in debt and felt suicidal after Jet2 sued me for holiday sickness claim' - The Mirror

Karl and Laura Hughes, from Nottingham, faced contempt of court charges after falling ill with gastroenteritis on a Jet2 holiday at a hotel in Las Palmas, Lanzarote

A dad says he was pushed close to suicide and is now 25,000 in debt after accused him of lying about falling ill on holiday.

Karl Hughes was brought to the edge by years of legal fighting with the holiday firm which brought civil proceedings for an alleged false claim after he and his wife Laura sought compensation having allegedly suffered from food poisoning on a Lanzarote break in 2016.

In a potentially alarming move for some Brits who claim to have fallen ill abroad, Jet2 urged a judge to find the couple guilty in civil proceedings of contempt of court, meaning they faced up to two years in prison and a huge fine.

Despite successfully defending themselves in the contempt of court legal fight, Karl has been emotionally and financially battered by what he calls a legal trauma that lasted five years and sees him tens of thousands of pounds out of pocket.

"It has been five and half years of hell," the karate instructor told The Mirror. "My wife has been having mental health help. I've suffered depression and been suicidal. Being faced with prison is awful. Awful.

"They have spent a lot of money trying to put two people with kids in prison. We hate them.

"I would never go with them again. When a Jet2 advert comes on tv or the radio, I have a panic attack. I feel anxious and my heart races."
