In a first, Gov. DeSantis lets non-compete bill become law sans signature - Tallahassee Democrat

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis allowed three bills to become law without his signature, marking the first time he has done so since taking office.
  • One of the bills, HB 1219, strengthens the enforcement of non-compete clauses, extending the maximum time to four years for high-earning employees.
  • The other two bills address fertility preservation services for state workers and compensation for a car accident victim.

For the first time since he took office in 2019, Gov. Ron DeSantis allowed legislation to become law without his signature.

Three bills became law without DeSantis’ explicit approval at midnight of July 3. One of them, HB 1219, is a measure pushed by big businesses – including GOP megadonor Ken Griffin’s Citadel hedge fund.

The new law, named the Florida Contracts Honoring Opportunity, Investment, Confidentiality, and Economic Growth (CHOICE) Act, strengthens the enforcement of non-compete and “garden leave” clauses in employment contracts.

Groups of free market think tanks and labor law activists and professors spoke out against the bill and urged DeSantis to veto it.
