Independent Scientists Highlight Ongoing Concerns in East Palestine at Environmental Conference

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Today, Government Accountability Project whistleblower and independent environmental tester, Scott Smith, and a team of scientists including Don Brown, Bruce Vigon, and Dr. Beatrice Golomb, presented key findings from a target study on the environmental and health impacts of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment disaster.

The study unveiled today at the Society of Toxicology and Environmental Chemistry (SETAC) Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, reveals elevated levels of persistent contamination and ongoing health concerns in the affected area following the February 3, 2023, Norfolk Southern Train Derailment, subsequent consequences of burning train car chemicals, and ensuing remediation efforts.

Key findings include:

  • Contamination Levels: Initial stream and soil samples show contamination above background concentrations and established human health screening levels, particularly on private residential property,
  • Remediation Challenges: While cleanup efforts around Ground Zero are mostly complete, contamination in outlying areas, particularly southeast of Ground Zero in Pennsylvania, remains unaddressed,
  • Ongoing Health Concerns: Human health investigations have documented effects related to the incident, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and assessment,
