In a yet another nudge to food and beverage sector, top government officials asked industry stakeholders to ensure stricter oversight of food labelling and advertising, warning that false or exaggerated claims can erode consumer trust and pose serious public health risks.
Government leaders and regulators on Wednesday sounded a strong warning against misleading and exaggerated food advertisements, urging the industry to adopt honest, transparent labelling and ensure all claims are independently validated.
At the National Stakeholder Consultation on Food Labelling, Advertisement and Claims convened by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at Vigyan Bhawan, officials stressed that false or unverified claims not only undermine consumer trust but can also threaten public health.
Sanjeev Sanyal, Member, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, said the problem runs deeper than marketing hype.
