Indiana AG Rokita addresses illegal employment, FAIRNESS act in Mishawaka - WSBT

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WSBT) — Indiana's Attorney General Todd Rokita is in Mishawaka talking about a new state law that's meant to crack down on illegal employment. The FAIRNESS Act gives Rokita the ability to investigate businesses that knowingly employ undocumented workers.

State leaders are calling it one of the strongest immigration enforcement laws passed in Indiana. The law creates penalties for those that knowingly or intentionally recruit or hire undocumented immigrants.

The visit by the attorney general included a tour of a local construction site in Mishawaka for a future eye surgery center, highlighting what Attorney General Rokita calls a "model, client worksite".

The FAIRNESS ACT officially goes into effect tomorrow and will impact all employers across the state. Rokita says, “Because here in Indiana we put Hoosier citizens above illegal aliens. This law is deliberately targeted at bad actors, bad employers, not responsible businesses.”

When asked if the FAIRNESS Act could make existing labor shortages worse in sectors like construction or agriculture, he responded, “you know, I'm not here to pretend to be an economist. Some opinions might say that. Other opinions might say no, not so much. I'm concerned as the elected attorney general of the city of Indiana to do what's right. It's not right on a whole number of ways to look at it to hire illegal aliens.”
