‘Infiltrated’: Whistleblower says St. Boniface seniors robbed of their retirement - Winnipeg Sun

A Winnipeg whistleblower says seniors living in a Manitoba Housing complex in St. Boniface are having their “retirement robbed from them” as crime, theft and drug use overwhelm the building and spill into the wider neighbourhood.

The whistleblower, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Sun that a senior acquaintance in the 101 Marion St. building — once a 55-plus complex — can no longer safely keep groceries, clothing or personal belongings inside his suite.

“He told me what he’s going through. He can’t keep food there, clothes get stolen, not just food,” the whistleblower said. “You’ve got all these good people just trying to go to retirement, and now they’ve been basically infiltrated.”

The individual described the building as plagued by theft, vandalism, drug activity and what they called “mysterious criminal behaviour,” adding that many residents feel abandoned by the province.

“This historic site, where our community was born, is just being turned into a total hellhole,” they said. “Seniors are being screwed over big time.”

The whistleblower said Manitoba Housing tenants have reported being locked in elevators, losing access to laundry facilities when clothing is stolen, and enduring an environment where drug dealing and addiction dominate common spaces.

“You report anything and it doesn’t get dealt with,” they said. “It’s becoming an absolute hellhole. The workers know what’s going on, but nothing gets addressed.”
