INQToday: PNP eyes sites beyond Taal Lake for missing sabungeros; whistleblower under protection - Inquirer.net

Apart from Taal Lake in Batangas, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is “examining” other sites, where the 34 missing sabungeros (cockfighting aficionados) might be located, according to PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III.

Torre revealed this information in reaction to the appeal of some relatives of the missing sabungeros for authorities to conduct diving operations in Taal Lake.

Filipinos are now being recruited and trafficked to work illegally in online gaming hubs in Pakistan, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) warned Monday, calling it an alarming “new trafficking route.”

In a statement, the BI said the discovery was an “alarming development” that “marks a dangerous shift in trafficking patterns,” noting its similarity to the operations of Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos).

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will not object to the Department of Finance’s (DOF) proposed tax on online gaming operators, as long as it is backed by sufficient studies, a Palace official said.

In a briefing on Monday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro was asked about the President’s stance on the proposal, amid concerns that it could discourage investment in the sector or drive some operators underground.

The race for the Senate presidency is not a “done deal” yet as far as the group supporting Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III for Senate president is concerned.
