'Invaluable' family caregivers provided $600 billion in unpaid support for aging adults - WJLA

WASHINGTON (7News) — 7News continues to investigate the cost of caregiving for aging family and friends. In a newly released report, AARP estimates caring for all adults with chronic, disabling, or serious health conditions tops $600 billion in value nationwide.

The AARP Public Policy Institute’s “Valuing the Invaluable” report breaks down the number of family givers per state and economic value they provide by aiding aging loved ones for free.

In the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, there are more than 1.8 million family caregivers. In 2021, they contributed more than $28 billion in unpaid care.

“It’s an unbelievable number,” said Jared Calfee, the state advocacy director for AARP Virginia.

AARP Public Policy Institutes Economic Value of Caregiving, 2021:

District of Columbia

  • Value per Hour: $19.83
  • Economic Value: $1.37 billion

Maryland

  • Value per Hour: $17.61
  • Economic Value:$12.5 billion

Virginia

  • Value per Hour: $15.51
  • Economic Value: $14.3 billion

According to the report, the value per hour is estimated "as the average of the state minimum wage, state home health aide median wage, and state median hourly cost of hiring a home care worker."

That number does not include financial cost to families like paying out-of-pocket expenses or lost wages if they miss work.
