AN IRISH lawyer has blasted employers who don’t pay minimum wage – and warned underpaying employers that they need to “watch out”.

Dublin-based solicitor Richard Grogan took to Instagram, posting under @richard_grogan_solicitors, to highlight employees’ rights.

The solicitor shared some vital information clarifying many questions regarding minimum pay.

The national minimum wage is currently 10.50 per hour.

He said: “I’m sometimes surprised at some of the questions that I get in and I hear about employers who are just really taking the biscuit.

“And I've got a number of questions in from people who say they're over 20 but are not being paid the 10.50 rate an hour. They're only being paid nine or 10 an hour."

With over 30 years’ experience, the solicitor explained what employers in breach may have to face.

He said: “In those circumstances, the employer is looking at a claim - not just under the National Minimum Wage Act, but under public holiday legislation, holiday legislation, payment of holiday pay.

“And that's just the start off with. There might be even claims on the terms of employment information act, all of which are ones where compensation can be awarded.”

It can result in a lot more than minimum wage claim, according to the solicitor.

He warned: “So, employers who are doing this need to watch out.

“They could end up down in the WRC paying a lot more than the 0.50 cent they’re trying to save.”

Grogan added: “That’s the law and that’s a fact.”
