WASHINGTON (TND) — Two IRS whistleblowers who claim the agency gave the president’s son special treatment in an investigation that was “slow-walked” and politically interfered with are testifying behind closed doors on Tuesday to the House Ways and Means Committee.
Gary Shapley, who led the IRS investigation into Hunter Biden, and Joseph Ziegler, a longtime special agent in the IRS’ Criminal Investigation Division, are testifying to lawmakers during an executive session.
The whistleblowers have claimed politics influenced the IRS’ investigation into Hunter Biden every step of the way and alleged that his father’s status as a former vice president and eventual president has benefitted him. Shapley has said that he believed Hunter Biden should have been charged with a felony for tax violations.
Ziegler told the committee at a hearing this summer that the investigation was continuously held back. He has also alleged that communications reviewed by investigators “may be a contradiction to what President Biden was saying about not being involved in Hunter’s overseas business dealings.”
“It appeared to me, based on what I experienced, that the U.S. Attorney in Delaware in our investigation was constantly hamstrung, limited, and marginalized by DOJ officials as well as other U.S. attorneys,” Ziegler said during the hearing.
