IUML Rally With Pakistan Flags After Pahalgam Attack? No, Claim Is False! - The Quint

A video showing a group of men, chanting slogans at a rally, dressed in green jerseys and holding green flags featuring a white crescent moon symbol, is being shared on social media platforms.

Users claimed that it showed Muslims in Kerala taking part in pro-Pakistan demonstrations. These claims are being shared in relation to the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The jerseys and flags did not feature the Pakistan national flag, but that of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)

  • It shows a demonstration by the party for opposing the Waqf Amendment Act that took place earlier in April, predating to the Pahalgam attack.

What we found: At first, we looked at the flag closely and noticed that it did not match with Pakistan's national flag. We compared the two and found visible differences.

  • We also did not not hear any slogans about Pakistan or Pahalgam in the clip, as well. Upon translation, we found that the crowd was cheering for Panakkad Sadiq Ali Thangal, the Kerala state president of IUML.

  • We, also, noticed that the t-shirts read 'Arangadi' (village in Kasargod), and ran a keyword search, accordingly.

  • Team WebQoof, then, found the same video posted by an Instagram account named ‘arangadi_official_page’. The video was posted on 16 April with the title, ‘Kozhikode’.
