Jairam Ramesh accuses Election Commission of India of false claims over ECINET compliance - The News Mill

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the Election Commission of India (ECI) on October 2 for appointing a committee to review ECINET’s compliance with legal provisions, describing the commission’s assertion that ECINET was developed in strict accordance with the law and the Constitution as a “lie.”

In a post on X, Ramesh claimed that doubts about the ECI’s decisions would not have arisen if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had acted with honest intentions.

He referred to the ECI’s press note on September 26, 2026, which announced a committee would certify the compliance of the legally contested ECINET system. He argued that such verification should have been unnecessary had the CEC’s intentions been genuine. ECINET was launched on January 22, 2026, with the stated objectives of enhancing transparency, credibility, and public trust. On that day, the ECI assured the public that the system “has been developed in strict accordance with the law” and complied fully with the Constitution of India, the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951, and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. Ramesh declared, “All of this was a lie.”

He further accused the ECI of violating the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, by restricting Electoral Registration Officers’ (EROs) access to the ECINET voter roll system and overruling EROs in states including Goa and West Bengal.
