The House Jan. 6 committee made four criminal referrals against former President Donald Trump for his role in the 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The committee also referred Rep. Scott Perry (R., Pa.) and three other Republicans to the House Ethics Committee for ignoring congressional subpoenas.
The Justice Department will ultimately decide whether to prosecute Trump or others in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The committee will release its eight-chapter report on the 2021 insurrection before it dissolves when Republicans take control of the House on Jan. 3.
The Jan. 6 congressional committee accused Jeffrey Clark, a Philadelphia native and former Justice Department official, of conspiring with former President Donald Trump to defraud the United States government.
The committee referred the matter to the Department of Justice for potential criminal charges, though Congress’s findings carry no official weight with any potential prosecution.
The panel’s report says “Trump entered into an agreement with individuals to obstruct” the certification of the 2020 election.
Among Trump’s co-conspirators were Clark and lawyer John Eastman, the report said.
Trump hoped to install Clark as acting attorney general as part of a plan to replace Biden electors in key swing states with false Trump electors.
