The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol released its final 845-page report on Thursday, marking the culmination of an exhaustive 18-month investigation into the violent insurrection and former president Donald Trump’s role inciting it. The voluminous report comes nearly two years after a pro-Trump mob of supporters stormed the Capitol to stop the counting of votes for presidential winner Joe Biden.

Here’s what to know

  • On Monday, the panel voted to refer four criminal charges against Trump to the Justice Department: obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress, conspiracy to defraud the United States, inciting or assisting an insurrection, and conspiracy to make a false statement.
  • The panel also voted to refer four Republican lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), to the House Ethics Committee for failing to comply with the investigative committee’s subpoenas.
  • The committee presented testimony over nine public hearings from more than 70 witnesses, the majority of whom were Republicans. More than 30 witnesses invoked the Fifth Amendment, according to the report.

Trump tried contacting over 190 GOP state lawmakers in Arizona, Georgia and Michigan amid a pressure campaign to influence state legislators and election administrators to overturn election results.
