Jan 6 Committee subpoenas Donald Trump to testify - Detroit Free Press

The U.S. House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol voted unanimously on Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump to testify, saying the evidence gathered to date clearly indicates his actions led to the rioting and destruction.

Saying there is precedent for Congress to compel the testimony of a former president, committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said there was "no doubt, none, that Donald Trump led an effort to upend American democracy" and that those efforts led to the violence.

The committee also presented testimony and emails on Thursday that indicated Secret Service officials had reason to believe that violence by the former president's supporters could erupt that day as Trump held a rally in which he and others repeated false claims that corruption had led the 2020 election to be stolen from him. They presented evidence that the Secret Service, and Trump, also knew people in the area of the rally were armed.

"This is a question about accountability to the American people," Thompson said. "He must be accountable."

Given that Trump has repeatedly fought legal efforts to force his testimony in other matters and has criticized the Democratic-led House committee looking into the attack, it was considered almost certain he would fight or attempt to ignore the subpoena. If he were to lose that fight, however, he could potentially face contempt charges, if the Justice Department chose to pursue them.
