Jay P. Holland has been fighting for his clients for more than 30 years with one consistent message: “Live your life, not your case.”

“There are very important decisions the client is making in every step of the case and I want to be the one to take some of the pressure off,” said Holland, principal with Joseph, Greenwald & Laake.

Holland represents clients in individual and class- action cases involving gender and race discrimination and sexual harassment, violations of the wage and hour laws and wrongful termination.

What’s the most important thing you do in your job?

My clients are often experiencing a stressful employment situation. The most important part of my job is listening to help them consider their options and craft a path forward. That plan might involve a negotiated resolution, filing an administrative complaint or litigation. It is essential to educate my clients about their rights as well as the risks/benefits for different approaches.

What is one aspect of your profession you would like to change?

Life is too short for unnecessary hostility from opposing counsel. Respect and civility are important not only for the well-being of those practicing law, but assures us that we are much more effective at accomplishing our clients’ goals. Developing a rapport with counsel opens lines of communications that would otherwise be closed. The profession has improved in this regard since I began practicing – it is a trend...
