A disciplinary judge on Colorado’s Supreme Court censured Republican lawyer Jenna Ellis on Wednesday for making false claims about voter fraud during the 2020 election.
Ellis served as senior legal advisor to the campaigns of both Pennsylvania state senator Doug Mastriano and former president Donald Trump.
She admitted to the Colorado Supreme Court that she made several false statements on social media and in TV appearances that the 2020 election was stolen – including that “Hillary Clinton still has not conceded the 2016 election,” that “Trump won by a landslide,” and that the outcome was “actually fraudulent.”
Ellis signed a stipulation that she violated professional ethics rules by misrepresenting the truth, “undermining the American public’s confidence in the 2020 presidential election.”
Political strategist Sam Chen said the judge’s decision to censure Ellis is unusual – but not surprising.
“This is something that I think could happen in other states. That’s the only thing I would look at because this is not contained to something she said in the court of law. This is contained to stuff that she said in public,” Chen said.
He said a censure is essentially a slap on the wrist, and Ellis likely won’t face other legal consequences.
