Jersey's 'discriminatory' housing and work law to be reviewed - Jersey Evening Post

A REVIEW into Jersey’s controversial housing and work legislation has been announced by the government to make sure it is “fit for purpose, effective and fair”.

The laws, which govern migrants’ rights to work and occupy housing in the Island, have been labelled “discriminatory” by critics, who argue they create a “two-tier” system. Newly arrived migrants are also denied free hospital treatment for their first six months in the Island, although any care they receive at the Emergency Department is free during this period.

In this weekend’s Saturday Interview, Jersey Care Federation chair Cheryl Kenealy highlighted that workers arriving in the Island are not eligible for subsidised GP appointments or prescriptions.

The government review forms part of its recently published Delivery Framework for Sustainable Economic Development.

Assistant Chief Minister Lucy Stephenson, who has political responsibility for the Control of Housing and Work Law, said many migrants came to the Island each year delivering “essential services”.

“Ministers will be working together to make sure that the housing needs of these migrants continue to be met and that good-quality accommodation is available to everyone who comes to work in Jersey,” she said.
