According to a report by The Guardian, the authors of the research he cites say he has it completely wrong. Instead of evidence of cooling, the study highlights just how quickly the planet is heating up due to human-driven emissions.
The study, published in Science, reconstructed 485 million years of climate history using 150,000 data points. While it shows massive swings in temperatures across deep time, the current spike is unique for its speed. Temperatures are climbing at an unprecedented pace—far faster than even past extinction events. Yet Rogan has repeatedly told his audience that we are in a “cooling period,” ignoring the context that today’s warming is happening in just a century, compared to tens of thousands of years in the past.
Scientists are alarmed by how this misinformation spreads through massive platforms like Rogan’s podcast, which reaches more than 20 million subscribers. As Jessica Tierney, a paleoclimatologist who co-authored the study, explained, “It’s all about the speed and we’ve never seen carbon dioxide and temperature rise as fast as now.” That speed is what threatens life on this planet, destabilizing ecosystems, coastlines, and food systems that humanity depends on.
