"Joy of Going to Work": Disability Employment Thrives, but Support Law Stalls - Seoul Economic Daily

At The Sarang (CEO Kwon Moon-kyung), a standard workplace for the disabled located in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, developmentally disabled designer Yoon Eun-seok was hard at work. Working on a design for a new calendar, Yoon moved his hands busily while looking at a hydrangea. As blue dots in various shades filled his tablet PC screen, a hydrangea—whose flower meaning is "sincerity"—soon bloomed in full.

The Sarang is where Yoon clocks in by 9 a.m. every morning. It is a space where senior (elderly) workers and developmentally disabled workers work together, and on their chests sit name badges reading "Good Packer Employee ." This clearly showed that the developmentally disabled person "" is "living independently" as a member of The Sarang and of society. The "joy" of going to work each day is becoming the "driving force" that enables them to live on their own.

Kwon Moon-kyung, CEO of The Sarang, explained, "Senior workers and developmentally disabled people help each other, communicate, and devote themselves to tasks such as packaging, reprocessing, and subcontracted work." Kwon added, "We put the meaning of working together into Good Packer, The Sarang's brand." Good Packer features drawings of a bear and an owl along with the phrase "Packing With Disabled & Senior Partners."
