MUSKEGON COUNTY — A termination hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 24, for Ottawa County Health Officer Adeline Hambley will move forward, a judge ruled Monday.
Hambley, who sued in February over attempts to demote her, had asked Muskegon County 14th Circuit Court Judge Jenny L. McNeill to reinstate a preliminary injunction against the board trying to fire her — or at least delay the scheduled removal hearing until the judge can set ground rules.

In her suit, Hambley claims the board's Ottawa Impact majority attempted to unlawfully demote her in January and, afterward, repeatedly interfered with her state-authorized health duties.
Ottawa Impact is a far-right fundamentalist group created by Ottawa County Board Chair Joe Moss and Vice Chair Sylvia Rhodea after they unsuccessfully challenged the previous board and county health officer over COVID-19 mitigation mandates in 2020 and 2021.
On Oct. 12, the Michigan Court of Appeals issued an opinion affirming Hambley was properly appointed the county health officer in December, but added the board of commissioners has the legal right to fire her for "just cause" — assuming state statute is followed.
