As the Busan mayoral election enters its final stretch, clashes between ruling and opposition candidates are intensifying over the bidding process for the 2030 Busan World Expo and allegations involving Johyun Gallery. The camp of Jun Jae-soo, the Democratic Party candidate, pressed for the disclosure of Expo bidding budgets and corporate sponsorship spending records, while the camp of Park Heong-jun, the People Power Party candidate, filed a legal complaint citing the dissemination of false information and obstruction of business.
Jun's election committee held a press conference at the Busan Metropolitan Council on Thursday, arguing that "corporate sponsorships raised during the 2030 Busan World Expo bidding process and budget execution records must be fully disclosed." Chief Spokesperson Park Hong-bae said, "The Expo bid was a major national project tied to Busan's future and the country's capabilities," adding, "Given the enormous budget and private sponsorships injected, citizen verification of the execution process is necessary."
Citing a Ministry of Economy and Finance report submitted to the National Assembly, the committee said the total Expo bidding-related budget for 2022-2023 stood at 574.4 billion won, and demanded disclosure of how corporate sponsorships delivered to Busan's Citywide Expo Promotion Committee were used and who was accountable.
