Canada’s whistleblower law is described as a “Trojan horse,” a “tissue-paper shield,” and a “complete and utter farce.” It’s time to fix it, Althia Raj writes.
A year ago, when I asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau whether he would reform the government’s whistle-blowing law to better protect those risking their jobs to warn of wrongdoing, he was non-committal. He said whistleblowers play “an extremely important role in flagging how government can do better,” and he thanked me for bringing the issue to his attention.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Trudeau task Treasury Board President Mona Fortier with reviewing the law this fall. Her mandate letter says she’s to “continue to take action to improve government whistleblower protections and supports” and “explore possible amendments to the Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act.
