Kansas City to pay $900K to settle whistleblower lawsuit, fire truck crash claim - KCTV

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City will be paying $900,000 to settle two legal cases against the city.

In a 9-4 vote on May 21, the city council approved a $500,000 settlement with the city’s former Director of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, Andrea Dorch.

On April 23, 2026, the city council authorized the payment after she filed suit against the city and City Manager Brian Platt in March 2024, alleging discrimination and whistleblower retaliation.

Dorch alleged she was targeted and forced out after raising concerns about a lack of minority hiring goals on major projects.

A second $400,000 settlement with the city is tied to a civilian car crash with a city fire truck, according to city documents.

The second payout passed 12-1 for Kenya Mitchell.

Mitchell claimed personal injuries as a result of the accident, with the settlement resolving liability, damages, and attorney’s fees.

Court documents show Mitchell argues she was hit by a fire truck in 2022 that ran a red light at 43rd and Madison in Kansas City.

In docket memos, the Law Department and the city’s Risk Management Committee recommended accepting both settlements.
