The protesters mobbing the Labour leader alluded to a far-right conspiracy theory proliferated by Boris Johnson
Sir Keir Starmer was bundled into the back of a police car outside Parliament for his own safety after he was targeted by a group of protesters who repeated Boris Johnson’s false claims that he had personally failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile.
Protesters opposed to vaccines and coronavirus restrictions had staged a protest in Westminster on Monday, billed as a “UK Freedom Convoy” after a similar protest against Covid-19 restrictions in Canada paralysed much of Ottawa.
Sir Keir was targeted by the group after emerging from Parliament, with protesters reportedly screaming “traitor”.
Protesters could also be heard screaming “paedophile” and accusing Sir Keir of “protecting paedophiles” – an apparent reference to false claims made by Boris Johnson in Parliament last week. One man shouted: “Were you protecting Jimmy Savile?”
Police officers encircled the Labour leader, pushing back the protesters. Sir Keir was then placed in the back of a police car, which sped away with him inside and its sirens going.
The Mirror reports that some of the protesters were carrying a noose. The anti-vaccine activist Piers Corbyn later addressed the group of protesters.
