Keys allegedly from Orleans Parish Jail given to council member by whistleblower - WDSU

A set of keys allegedly associated with the Orleans Parish Jail has been handed over to the state attorney general after a New Orleans city council member claimed to have obtained them from a whistleblower.

Council member JP Morrell posted a video, claiming a whistleblower was in possession of these keys to the Orleans Justice Center.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office responded to the post on social media, dispelling those claims and saying they are in possession of the jail keys and the ones shown in the video do not open the jail or a cell.

"To be clear, we are in possession of all the keys to the jail. The ones you’re showing off don’t open the jail or any cell. I would be careful with putting out misinformation to the public, especially regarding public safety and security.

Has my office done everything perfectly? No, but let’s be clear – my deputies work hard every single day and night so I won’t let you make a mockery of their work.

JP, look we get it – you don’t understand the gravity of running a law enforcement agency with hundreds of staff, 24/7 operations, and a jail population of over 1,200. But, this isn’t some fantasy Marvel movie, JP; it’s public safety. So maybe turn off the camera and take us up on the many offers we’ve extended to visit the jail.
