A joint investigation team for illegal medical practitioners, established to combat crimes by illegal medical institutions such as “office-run hospitals,” was launched on the 18th.

The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office announced on the same day, “We have established and begun operating the Joint Investigation Team for Illegal Medical Practitioners at the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office.” The team comprises 4 prosecutors, 7 police officers, and 19 members from related agencies, including the Ministry of Health and Welfare, National Health Insurance Service, Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, National Tax Service, and Financial Supervisory Service, totaling 30 members.

The team plans to focus on investigating cases involving the establishment and operation of illegal medical institutions like office-run hospitals, excessive non-covered medical treatments, and false insurance claims. The head of the Food and Drug Crime Investigation Division at the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office will serve as the team leader, with investigation units, investigation support teams, and joint enforcement teams also operating collaboratively.

According to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office, from 2009 to 2025, 1,805 institutions were identified as illegal medical institutions and received decisions from the National Health Insurance Service to reclaim medical benefits.
