La Verne will distribute $520,000 in hazard pay stipends to city employees who performed essential work during the coronavirus pandemic, beginning in the next few weeks.
Part of $7.6 million the city expects to receive through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, the City Council on Monday, March 7, unanimously approved the one-time payments. The decision to reward workers was made after city leaders expressed a desire to recognize the efforts of employees during such uncertain times.
Ultimately, there will be two tiers of stipends distributed based on time worked from March 2020 through June 2021, a period where “the predominant restrictions of the pandemic were in place,” a staff report reads.
A full stipend of $3,000 will be given to full-time employees who worked at least six months in that 15-month period. Those employees must have also worked a minimum number of hours in accordance with their weekly work schedule.
For part-time employees, those who worked an average of 25 hours in that period would also be eligible for a full disbursement.
Full- and part-time employees who didn’t meet those requirements would receive a $1,500 payment.
In addition to those amounts, public safety employees would also see $1,000 or $500 added to their stipends, depending on the number of hours worked.
“Our employees have done an amazing job and kept everything open,” Mayor Tim Hepburn said Monday. “You never saw anybody stop.”
