Labor Department Lacks Budget Advocate as Su Seeks Senate ... - Bloomberg Law

Julie Su’s troubled path to confirmation as US Secretary of Labor has left the department without a Cabinet-level advocate for its fiscal 2024 funding proposal.

Su is facing an intense opposition campaign by business groups and a tough path to garner enough votes in the Senate for approval. In the meantime she is serving as the acting secretary, a rare arrangement for the department.

House and Senate appropriations committee leaders plan to mark up their fiscal 2024 spending bills by mid-May and early June. President Joe Biden has asked Congress to boost the Labor Department’s budget by 11% at $15.1 billion for fiscal year 2024.

Without Su confirmed, the DOL lacks a leading voice to champion its priorities and defend against congressional efforts to cut back on Biden’s request. House Republicans are demanding major spending cuts in return for raising the US debt ceiling.

So far, every other Cabinet secretary has testified in Congress this year to make a case for their departments’ funding requests. Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), leaders of the Senate Appropriations panel that writes the DOL funding bill, say they haven’t met with Su to discuss anything outside of her nomination.
