It was recently confirmed that Kia Motors filed a lawsuit against the union executives who, without any grounds for dispute, illegally went on strike, causing severe financial damage to the company. Despite not undergoing any dispute resolution procedures with the Labor Commission, the Kia Union launched a strike on May 31 under the banner, “Resignation of the Yoon Suk Yeol Government,” a clear infringement of laws and a politically motivated action. The union, however, has defiantly branded the company's lawsuit as an “oppressive act against the union.”
On June 12, through an internal newsletter, the Kia Union issued a retaliatory statement, stating, “If the company continues to oppress the union, it won't only lead to the collapse of labor relations, but also push the union to respond with an unwavering and powerful resistance.” The union slammed the company for abusing lawsuits and charging the branch head and 5 managers with obstruction of business and violations of the Labor Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act following the general strike on May 31.
On May 31, the union held an eight-hour strike, divided into two four-hour slots in the day and night. The ensuing production disruption is estimated to have led to a loss of over 2,700 vehicles, amounting to a total sales loss of 70 billion won (US$55 million).
