Offering an employer’s perspective on the real-world implications of India’s new labour codes, Rajeev Chopra, Managing Director- Legal, Accenture stressed on the disconnect between the codes’ provisions and the operational realities of large, modern organisations and on the question of whether the legislative exercise has, in net terms, improved the ease of doing business. Chopra framed his remarks by acknowledging the gap that always exists between legal analysis and business execution. External advisors, he noted, provide objective perspectives but organisations must then take those perspectives and apply them to the businesses they actually run. The codes present precisely this challenge: provisions that are technically in force must be operationalised within HR systems, employment contracts, and workforce structures that were not designed around them.
