Labour, Land & Law: Mapping Landworker Livelihoods Amid UK Employment Reform - La Via Campesina

In Autumn 2025 the Land Workers’ Alliance (LWA) launched a survey to learn more about the wide diversity of landworker experiences in the UK context, and to understand the unique needs and conditions of different groups, and the nuance of how relations around land and labour play out.

The survey will inform a new report on ‘Landworker Livelihoods’, which aims to paint a more detailed picture of what it’s like to pursue a land-based livelihood in the UK in the 21st century; from the financial viability of running land-based businesses to the conditions of farmworkers and agricultural labourers.

LWA also begun running info sessions for employers who are keen to develop their understanding of workers’ rights and to initiate conversations that move towards imagining more progressive employment practices for the sector.

The intention is to learn from employers who are already leading the way on this, and through the survey LWA has been gathering information about ethical employment practices and horizontal business structures.

These initiatives come at a critical turning point for workers’ rights in the UK – not just within the agroecological sector, but across all industries, with significant changes to employment law under the Employment Rights Act 2025 bringing in a swathe of measures to strengthen worker protections between 2025 and 2027.
