DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A 46-year-old Lake City man was arrested Wednesday and accused of filing multiple fraudulent insurance claims with three different insurance agencies in Florence and Darlington counties, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
SLED charged Cornelius Travis Jones, with three counts of presenting a false claim for insurance payment. The charges include two counts involving claims more than $2,000 but less than $10,000 and one count involving a claim valued at $2,000 or less.
According to arrest warrants, Jones submitted a claim to State Farm on May 1 alleging that his 2007 Toyota Corolla had been sideswiped, causing damage to the driver’s side.
Investigators said they determined the damage was preexisting after comparing the submitted photos to images from three previous claims Jones submitted in 2026. State Farm paid Jones $3,500 on the claim, according to warrants.
The Florence County warrant also alleges Jones has three or more convictions for which a prison term is contingent upon the value of the property involved. That makes this case eligible for enhanced sentencing based on South Carolina code.
Two additional warrants filed in Darlington County allege Jones attempted the same scheme with two other insurance companies. Investigators say he submitted a false claim to Progressive on Jan. 16, and Auto-Owners Insurance on March 13.
