Larache police investigate woman over false Ceuta migration claims - Yabiladi.com

Police in Larache have opened a judicial investigation into a woman accused of spreading false claims about the recent mass migration attempts toward Ceuta, according to an official statement issued on August 8.

The investigation was launched under instructions from the competent public prosecutor's office after the woman gave an interview to a Moroccan news outlet claiming that official authorities had opened the border to would-be migrants and had «brought these migrants before abandoning them and refusing to allow them to enter Ceuta». Her statements were subsequently widely shared on social media.

Authorities said the woman was identified and questioned by Larache judicial police before being brought before the courts on suspicion of reporting fictitious crimes, knowingly spreading false information, defamation and insult.

According to the statement, the woman had voluntarily traveled to Fnideq intending to cross irregularly into Ceuta but was prevented from doing so by security forces. Authorities allege that she subsequently made the claims that triggered the investigation, describing them as «false and misleading».
