HURRICANE, W.Va. (WCHS) — Several police officers from departments across a six-county region were honored at Valley Park in Hurricane on Thursday.

This was part of the Huntington Regional Safety Program Awards as officers were recognized for outstanding work in highway safety last year from speeding citations to DUIs.

Eight law enforcement agencies and ten officers were honored for their work.

West Hamlin Police Captain J.J. Napier took home the Traffic Safety Officer of the Year award.

"Greet everyone with a smile. I try to have a positive influence on a traffic stop," Napier said. "No one wants a citation, but we issue citations to discourage the high speeds and discourage the cell phone usage and discourage not wearing your seatbelt. We want everyone to go home safe."

The program featured law enforcement from Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, Putnam and Mason Counties.
