A UK law firm has moved to restrict employee access to generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) tools, requiring prior approval for their use, after detecting a significant increase in engagement with such platforms.

The decision by Hill Dickinson, which employs more than 1,000 people across offices in the UK, Europe and Asia, highlights the growing concern among businesses about how AI is used in the workplace, particularly in data-sensitive industries such as law.

Hill Dickinson’s internal email, first reported by the BBC, revealed that employees made approximately 32,000 visits to ChatGPT over a seven-day period in January and February. Additionally, the firm recorded more than 3,000 visits to DeepSeek, a Chinese AI chatbot, and nearly 50,000 visits to Grammarly, a popular writing assistance tool.
