Law & Order: SVU picks right up following the departure of Kelli Giddish's Detective Amanda Rollins. Captain Olivia Benson and Detective Fin Tutuola remark that they can already feel her absence and that nothing ever good happens at night. Enter Deputy Chief McGrath with news of a civil rights investigation into the Bronx unit, triggered by a whistleblower. McGrath wants Benson to go to the Bronx to clear out cases. Elsewhere, Detective Grace Muncy is practicing her shooting and lamenting her previous outburst on the witness stand as Captain Mike Duarte muses that maybe she should've stayed in the Bronx gang unit after all.
As Benson walks her son Noah home that night, she sees gang symbols painted outside of her building and teen boys in masks standing menacingly with machetes. She sends Noah inside as she goes over to confront them. Another man on a scooter knocks her to the ground and the assailants viciously beat her in retaliation for Oscar Papa of the Tremont gang, perpetrators of a vicious rape earlier in the season. She recounts the attack to the EMT and another detective and she figures that she was greenlit by this gang she worked a case on earlier and willingly hands over her gun -- but she's clearly shaken but the event and by the fact she had to shoot at kids at all.
Following her stint at the hospital, McGrath checks up on Liv and delivers the unwelcome news that her old nemesis Duarte will be in tomorrow to take her victim statement. Fin arrives to offer...
