A US Department of Labor official’s recent comments raise questions of “bias against American farmers,” two Republican lawmakers told acting Secretary Julie Su.

In a letter to Su Monday, Sen. Bill Cassidy (La.) and Rep. Ted Budd (N.C.) focused on an interview given by Mike Rios, a regional enforcement coordinator at the DOL’s Wage and Hour Division.

Rios, who spoke with the nonprofit news outlet Prism about H-2A temporary agricultural visas, said the program “literally is the purchase of humans to perform difficult work under terrible conditions, sometimes including subhuman living conditions.”
