Lawsuit challenges Hawaiian Airlines vaccine mandate - Pacific Business News - Pacific Business News (Honolulu)

A group of Hawaiian Airlines employees has filed a lawsuit alleging the company’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate violates federal law.

The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed in the federal district court in Honolulu earlier this week and alleges that the mandate violates employees’ rights by not granting accommodations for religious or medical reasons.

In a statement emailed to PBN, however, Hawaiian Airlines said that it granted “reasonable accommodations” to the mandate.

The company’s vaccine mandate went into effect Wednesday, requiring all employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19. In the statement, the airline said that about 270 of its employees chose to take unpaid leave or resign rather than get vaccinated.

“Following our Jan. 4 COVID-19 vaccination deadline, 96% of our 6,600-plus U.S.-based teammates are immunized, and a limited number of employees received reasonable accommodations,” the company said. “We know that our vaccine requirement has been a challenging topic, but we have a responsibility to our fellow teammates, guests, and communities to keep each other safe – and vaccines are the most effective protection against the virus. We respect the decision of about 270 of our colleagues to take unpaid leave or seek other job opportunities, and we wish them well.
