Lawsuit filed against Woodland Joint Unified School District claims retaliation against whistleblower - Daily Democrat

A former employee of the Woodland Joint Unified School District filed a lawsuit against the district in early May, claiming the administration retaliated after they had complained about alleged mishandlings of nutrition service operations.

The case titled “SHERRI ARFSTEN vs WOODLAND JOINT UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT” was filed on May 5, according to court documents from the Yolo County Superior Court.

Claimant Sherri Arfsten states the suit stems from cases related to what she cites as whistleblower retaliation, defamation, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, harassment, and harassment and retaliation in violation of the Fair Employment and Housing Act.

Arfsten is seeking $1.7 million from the district, with $850,000 in special damages and another $850,000 in general damages.

According to the section titled “Circumstances regarding claim,” Arfsten states she was the subject of “continuous retaliation and harassment” after she reported alleged mishandlings while she was working as the Supervisor of Nutrition Service Operations for WJUSD in early 2023. The list of complaints included in the suit includes:

  • Employees were not receiving their proper wages
  • Money from the schools was missing on several occasions and not submitted to the nutrition office
  • Employees were preparing and receiving payment for custom meals for adults and not submitting money to the district
  • Employees were claiming meals/snacks that were not served
